A rebozo is a long straight piece of cloth which looks like a cross between a scarf and a shawl. The garment is considered to be part of the Mexican identity and nearly all Mexican women own at least one. The beautiful traditions of using the rebozo are handed down from mother to daughter and midwife to midwife. The many uses of the rebozo include carrying groceries or babies, doing special relaxing massages during pregnancy, birth and postpartum, and performing ceremonies for important passages of women’s lives.
Currently the rebozo is used by midwives and other birthkeepers. As one experienced midwife has said, the rebozo is an extension of arms to hug, protect and give love to a human being.
The World Health Organization has stated that the lack of studies on traditional practices should not become an obstacle in their application or development. The use of rebozo is a practice ingrained in Mexican culture.
